Our current office location is located on Newbury Street in Boston...right in the heart of the high-end fashion district. When I step outside of my door, I am inundated with fashion galore. I came up with the idea of doing a menswear line some time ago after finishing a chapter in The Power of Being. In it, I describe how Paul's urging to the church community to dress modestly or to not ordain oneself in costly apparel had more to do with the true cost of obtaining diving for pearls and mining for precious jewels..all being done via slave labor.
Today, that not much has changed. One in eight people in the world works in the garment industry. How can we collectively turn our attention from the length of our skirts and "uniformity" in choir robe and instead focus on improving their working conditions? It starts with embracing sustainable companies that improve the wage earning and working conditions of garment workers and use ethical and fair labor practices.
It was very easy for me to stand on my soap box and declare that in writing. But as the saying goes: when you point your finger at someone, three fingers are pointing back at you.
As I searched high and low for the "right" plus-sized company to fit my frame, I decided to become part of the solution. Certainly, I can start by creating my own line and found companies that produced ethical apparel. Sadly, it does not completely solve the problem of slave labor and sweatshops. But it is a start in the right direction, and I believe more companies will start as a result.
And so, here it is, my first clothing and goods line, which will expand as the year goes on. Please enjoy and visit my shop on the next page. I named the line Stillness. by [Z]Xorin and Clover Goods.
